Hi all, just wanted some opinions on my close friend's second visit to her consultant. He diagnosed her about 6 weeks ago, and gave her a depo jab for pain in right arm, hip, ankles etc He prescribed methotrexate and hydroxychloroquine and tramadol. He was very kind and understanding and said she was "a martyr to pain" as she hadnt bothered to get help sooner.
She saw him again on Monday, he had a student with him, and examined her again, the student asked if he should close the door and was told that it was too hot in te room., he then asked how things were. He told her that she is a "larger lady" (she is a size 18) and that some pain is due to this.
She told him of the bad side effects of the mtx, and he told her to stop taking it. He asked her about work, she is a teaching assistant in a special needs school, and he replied "oh, well, change your job, you do realise that its far to physical for you now"
He is arranging a physio appointment and gave her another depo injection, and told her to come back in 6 months!! he will then decide on which medication to try next. She said she felt very uncomfortable, and that he didnt seem very interested and she felt he was saying that basically its all her own fault!! She's trying to get her head around al this without more stress.
What do you all think of this??

Hi Barbara

That is awful. What a terrible time your friend had. That consultation was wrong in so many ways. I would suggest that your friend asks for a second opinion and to be seen asap. I think she should make a complaint about the way she was treated but first and foremost she needs to get some medication sorted out. If there is only one Consultant at the hospital she attends is there another hospital within travelling distance. There is enough stressed involve in this disease without having an unsympathetic doctor.

Hi Sheila, thank you for your reply. She attends the same clinic as I do, Guy's in London. There are at least 6 consultants, so changing shouldn't be a problem. I think she wants to ignore her RA again now, due to such a bad consultation. She saw the same one on her first visit and he was fine, no rudeness or unkindness. I just dont get these consultants. The first one I saw was rude and kept leaving the room to speak to another patient. He diagnosed me, gave me the jab, without telling me what it was (different one from Jacky's) and then the script for methotrexate without telling me I needed regular bloods done. The one I see now is very kind and listens and I feel comfortable.
I do agree she should complain, but I doubt she will, I think she is too upset at the moment. We shouldnt have to be treated like this by the caring professionSad
